Dugout

There is a lot of waiting and in between time in baseball. Dugout is about the in between. All the photos are in and around dugouts spanning about 8 years of spring recreational baseball during the years 2003 through 2011. The young players occupied their time in the dugout between being on the field or at bat or sitting out an inning in ways unique to being a kid. Waiting to be on deck to bat, waiting to retake the field, and just being bored forced the kids to find things to interact with in the dugout such as the equipment, the fence or each other. This was a time just before phones became the ubiquitous time filler. The style of dugout sometimes influenced how they related to the temporary confining space. Some were cage-like surrounded by chain link fencing. Some were wood or brick structures. Some were just an old bench. Dugout is about what kids do in the dugout in between, a holding space for waiting your turn to play.
